The London Biennale, 2000
Mary Sherman participated in the London Biennale as one of the five, then members of the artist collective TransCultural Exchange, which Mary founded in Chicago in 1988 and incorporated in Boston as a 501(c)(3) in 2002. The other members at the time included Ted Cantrell, Vicki Hanks, Bill Rock, Malvina Sammarone, and Sunghoon Yang.
In the spirit of the artist David Medalla’s ground-breaking, free-for-all biennale, the artists gave away 300 The London Biennale, 2000 unique, 4”x4” art works – in the guise of drink coasters at Cynthia’s Cyberbar in London. All the works were tagged with the project’s website and information to let people know that the coasters were artworks/part of the Biennale and free for them to take.
This project later became the inspiration for TransCultural Exchange’s first, truly global project, The Coaster Project, Destination: The World.
The collective then went on to participate in the Biennale again in 2008 and 2010. For the 2010 edition, at David Medalla’s request, Mary created a satellite site for the London Biennale in Boston for TransCultural Exchange.
