MECHANICAL UNIVERSE, PART I: THE PASTORAL
Dimensions can be varied; each individual ‘box’: 7.25″x25″x16″
Oil paint on wood, aluminum (steel brackets), motors, solar panels, wire, electronics.

Mechanical Universe exploits technology’s ability to transform perceptions of works through the orchestration of sound, visual and kinetic effects. The piece starts off looking like an irreverent homage to Donald Judd. With a mere push of a button, though, the more playful antics of Jean Tinguely and Alexander Calder are evoked, as doors swing open, revealing the Sherman’s collaboration with Italian artist Rudi Punzo and his cyber insects – an up-dated, modular version of the 17th century Italian pastoral (picnic) by way of the 21st century.
