Artistic Research Salon (ars)

In 2017 Cécile Vulliemin (then at swissnex Boston) and Mary Sherman, Director of TransCultural Exchange decided to host a series of dinners, or ars (artistic research salons) as a way to discuss America’s impending adoption of Artistic Research as a requirement for a PhD in the arts.1

Later, in 2020 with Artistic Research now well on its way to being embraced by many colleges and universities throughout the U.S., Mary decided to broaden the scope of its ars. The ars still are intimate, informal conversations, conducted over an evening meal. They also still remain an integral part of Mary and TransCultural Exchange’s decades-long history of bringing together people interested in cross-cultural, trans-disciplinary artistic pursuits around the globe. The focus of each ars, however, has been expanded to encompass more than just issues of pedagogy. The gatherings now are diverse as our invited guests.

For a full listing of all the ars and their guest speakers please see here.

1Under the Bologna Process, signed in 1999, European universities agreed to start adopting similar standards for the awarding of degrees. With that came the acceptance of a Ph.D. in the arts and the notion of Artistic Research.
